Dear Friends,

1997 was certainly a cross-roads for all of us and I was honoured to play an active part in ensuring that this period of transition left Hong Kong with all its options open. The "one country two systems" policy can indeed offer Hong Kong the framework necessary to meet future challenges; fair, independent, and well balanced views must, however, continue to be incorporated in our decision-making process. This is precisely the kind of role that the Accountancy Constituency Representative should play in Legco and this is the role that I will continue to play if I am re-elected.

I hope you will agree that this is not the time for half-hearted representation. Our profession promotes the very values on which Hong Kong's success and reputation were built; I am convinced that Hong Kong's future depends on our ability to maintain these values. We must therefore protect and promote the interests of our profession with all our energy and conviction ensuring that Hong Kong accountants continue to shape, by their influence and skills, the future of our community. This is the corner-stone of my platform and the commitment I am, once again, pledging to my Constituency.

Politics is often described as the art of compromise. It is that of course, but it is much more: when all is said and done, practical results and values remain the real benchmark of a Legislator's contribution. I am very proud of the work we have accomplished together since I joined Legco in 1991. I have always maintained the highest degree of transparency in my Legco work. My forthcoming election literature will make the highlights of this work even more accessible.

Please honour me once again with your trust and re-elect Eric Li Ka-cheung on 24 May 1998.
